Bipolar mood disorder is not just mood swings. It is differentiated from major depression by a manic or hypomanic episode. You cannot be diagnosed “bipolar” if you haven't had this mania or hypomania. So, what is a manic/hypomanic episode?
A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood lasting at least 1 week or any duration if hospitalization is necessary.
During this period of time 3-4 of the following symptoms have been present to a significant degree.
The manic episode is the “high pole” and depression is the “low pole” which is why it is called bipolar. We do not call a person manic if they are under the influence of a substance such as cocaine which mimics these symptoms. It is also not a manic episode if these symptoms are caused by a health issue such as hyperthyroidism.
